NETWORKED URBANISM
This project is fueled by an independent study of embedded digital and wireless technologies and their effect on public space and social interaction. Since Rome has few embedded digital and wireless technologies my program creates a hypothetical model of digital connection. The Mattatoio area is a critical node connecting the Tiber River to the interior extents of the southern Aurelian Wall. As such the design of this area is predicated on the existence of this urban elbow. The axis through the plaza is fl anked by a series of structures housing projection cubes. These cubes can be tailored to suit different events in the plaza. Upon exiting the plaza, the newly redesigned Via Monte Testaccio forms the next axis which connects the river system to the Aurelian Wall. In context with the theme of the networked city, this area is equipped with wireless internet access, and points of wireless interaction where site users can interact in the immaterial world which may change their interaction in the material world. By bringing typically indoor wireless computing activities outside a new breed of social interaction may form that can change the socio/physical relationships of place.
